Spokesman-Review article "Cut off by Faith"

i posted this yesterday in friends but it never showed up in friends.

I hope we don't wear folks out with this topic. Our hope is that our story will encourage others in similar situations to contact the media and let their stories be heard. I used to think that the JW religion was benign and harmless. I no longer believe this. Any organization that chooses a policy that does not put the safety of children first is dangerous. It is sad that there are many rank and file JWs who are ignorant of this issue and blindly follow WT. So if the publicity helps even one person, what we have done is not in vain.

The elder Graham had one thing right. When a person who is one of JWs starts down the road of being "openly" critical of the organization they most certainly know where the raod leads. Now I'm not saying that there isn't alot of criticism that can be justifiably leveled against the organization, only that one can choose to be discreet or indiscreet.
We chose to be extremely discreet for the sake of family for a number of years. We were "openly" critical about the organization to only one person who wasn't even a member of the local congregation. He did not come to us first in harmony with Matt. 18:15. He ran straight to the local body of elders. Discreet went out the window once the congregation elders chose to ignore scriptural guidelines. (See Mr Rocky's post about details of his conversations with Mike Graham.) Once we were sanctioned unfairly, we had nothing more to lose as our families blindly follow the organization. By the way, as far as we know, there has not been an announcement to the congregation indicating that I am no longer one of Jehovah's Witnessess. However, for the most part, I am treated as if I have been disfellowshipped. The only JW family members who still have contact with me live hundreds of miles away. Our association has been limited to phone calls regarding health matters. Linda

I believe there was one reader who wrote to the Spokesman asking why this article was front page news. The Spokesman commented to the effect that, given the religious situation in the world today with fanatical religions causing trouble (such as 9/11 terrorism), it was an important subject to cover. Other letters to the Spokesman were favorable. We have had phone calls, mail, invitations to join Bible study groups and churches, hugs and prayers on our behalf.
My mother asked me why I talked to the newspaper. She is finding it difficult to believe that Rocky would be DFd for speaking about the child molestation reporting policy to only one person. My father thinks Rocky should have met with the JC anyway, but we knew the policy would not be changed so a meeting with the JC would be in vain. Rocky would have been DFd anyway. I believe that keeping JW scandal public keeps pressure on WT. I told my mother I spoke to the paper because we need to protect children - something WT has not been doing.

I grew up in Seattle and now live in rural Eastern Washington. I still have faithful JW family in the Seattle area who still speak to me (I'm not officially DF'd or DA'd, altho Mr Rocky has been DF'd - I think the local BOE won't make the announcement because we went public with our story and were featured on the front page of the Spokesman Review.)

Identity Cards
by Mysterious indid you hate them as much as i did?
i always tried so hard in school to make sure that no one saw it.
it tries so hard to be unobtrusive on the front, but how embarassing in high school if people think you have some kind of "lost child" card on you.

As paranoid as the JWs are about the blood issue, I'm surprised they didn't have us surgically attach them to our bodies somewhere, or at least tattoo them on our kids!

Beware is this a new Elder tatic to get you?
by skyman ini have a friend that was dumb enough to allow two elders in his house at the same time to talk to him, he let them in.
i have told him over and over again never to talk to two elders at the same time.
i'll get to the point.

You can tell the elders that you will go to the newspapers/media, which is what we did. When Joel was DF'd, we wrote a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. The regional paper decided to do a story on shunning because of learning of what we wrote. JWs hate negatie publicity.

MAJOR SHUNNING ARTICLE SPOKESMAN REVIEW WASHINGTON
Although it has not stopped the local congregation from shunning me (there has not been an announcement at the KH that I am "no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses"), my sister and my mother are still talking to me because the local congregation has not pursued taking action against me. We can only imagine what this has done to the local door-to-door ministry. We are well known in our community and have had only positive feedback and support.

What does it mean to Love your neighbor as your self?
by jst2laws inas one can tell by my screen name i am focused on love as a key ingredient of existence.
i was a jw elder when i first came here and worn out from wt rules and had become acutely focused on the 'two laws'.
matthew 22:39 is one of a few places that the 'two laws' are recorded where we are told to love god with our whole heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Just something to think about - Jesus gave a very nice illustration to answer the question posed, "who really is my neighbor?" This is the very well known "Good Samaritan" illustration. IMHO, I believe Jesus was showing us that the demonstration of love is a very practical thing and not out of our grasp. If it is in our power to help someone with kindness than we should do that. The illustration did not specifically say that the Samaritan provided practical assistance outside of his means of life. (One could extropolate that he did or did not.) But I am not a Biblical scholar and tend to be very Zen about my scriptural readings. Just my two-bits....

Barb Anderson & Linda Jahn interviewed on Mark Furman Show, Spokane, WA
by AndersonsInfo inthought you'd like to know that today at 11 am pacific standard time, which was 1 pm tennessee time, i was interviewed for an entire hour by mark furman on 1510 kga, the big talker show, originating in spokane, wa, population 250,000. former jw, linda jahn, was interviewed from 12:00 to 1 pm.
all this attention to our cause originated from the disfellowshipping and shunning of joel jahn in davenport, wa, a few months back.
at that time joel wrote a letter to the local davenport newspaper explaining the wt disfellowshipping policy used against him because he spoke out against the religion's child abuse policies.

Spokane is a small town. The radio station is a small AM station. I don't know that many people ask for recordings of talk shows around here.
